Obtaining a Provisional Licence

To learn to drive you have to be 17 (unless registered disabled) and in possession of a valid provisional licence.  You may complete a D1 form from the Post Office and send it to the DVLA with your passport or birth certificate and a passport-sized photo (a D100 form will help complete).  You must tell the DVLA if you have ever had or currently suffer from a list of conditions listed on the D100 form.  You may also apply at the DVLA online service which takes around two weeks to be processed.

You may apply for your provisional licence up to 2 months before your 17th birthday, and make a start on or just after it!
